The answer in two lines

If your water pressure is good and you are finishing the bathroom from scratch, a concealed rain shower gives you the best feel and the cleanest look. If the pressure is weak or you don't want to break into the wall, an exposed shower set (shower column) with a hand shower is the safer choice and easier to maintain. Before you decide: find out your water pressure and read the minimum operating pressure listed in the shower's catalog.

As winter arrives, many people renovate their bathrooms and ask: "Should I get a big rain shower or a regular shower? And will my water be enough?" The answer is not only about looks; it is about water pressure, the type of water heater, and how it is installed. In this guide from Tawredaat (توريدات), an electrical, finishing and sanitary ware store in Cairo and Giza, we compare the three types and show you how to choose without regrets after the tiles go up.

Concealed rain shower, exposed shower set or hand shower? A quick comparison

Type Water pressure needed Installation Maintenance Best for
Concealed rain shower (large head in the ceiling or wall + built-in mixer) Medium to high, and the bigger the head, the more water it needs Must be done at the rough-in stage before tiling (built-in body + pipes inside the wall) Harder: any mixer fault needs a plumber who knows the system, and only the trim comes off A bathroom being finished from scratch, good pressure, and anyone who wants a modern look and a clear space
Exposed shower set / shower column (rain head + hand shower on a visible pipe) Medium, and most work well in ordinary homes On the wall with no breaking, fitted to the existing mixer outlets Easy: every part is in front of you and can be replaced on its own Renovating without breaking walls, rented apartments, and anyone who wants a rain head and a hand shower in one set
Hand shower on a bath and shower mixer The lowest pressure need of the three types The easiest: a hose and a wall holder The easiest and cheapest: clean the nozzles and replace the hose Low pressure, children and older people, and cleaning the bathtub

How much water pressure does a rain shower need?

There is no single number for every shower; each manufacturer lists the minimum pressure and the flow rate per minute in its catalog. An example from hansgrohe: a large 40×40 cm ceiling rain head (Raindance E 400) is listed with a minimum pressure of about 1.7 bar and a flow of about 20 liters per minute at 3 bar. On the other hand, the same company makes heads designed for low pressure (LowPressure) that work from 0.2 bar. In other words, a large head needs more water, and if the pressure is not enough, the water will feel like it is "dripping" rather than "raining".

How do you find out your water pressure?

  • ✔ The easiest way: a small pressure gauge that a plumber fits on the tap tells you the pressure in bar.
  • ✔ The bucket test: open your current shower fully and time how long a bucket takes to fill; if it is very slow, a large head will disappoint you.
  • ✔ Test at peak times (morning and evening), because pressure in apartment buildings drops when everyone opens the water at the same time.
  • ⚠ If you live on a high floor or the water cuts out and comes back, assume the pressure is weak until you measure it.

When do you need a water booster pump?

If the pressure is weak in the whole home, not only in the shower, the right fix is usually a booster pump that a plumber installs on the water line, not a more expensive shower. The pump runs on electricity, so it must be on a sound line with earthing and an earth leakage (RCD) breaker, which is one of the electrical finishing mistakes you should avoid. If a pump is not an option, choose a smaller head or a model designed for low pressure.

Does an instant water heater affect a rain shower?

Yes. An instant (tankless) water heater heats a limited amount of water per minute; according to a Home Depot guide, most tankless heaters deliver roughly 2 to 5 gallons per minute (about 7.5 to 19 liters), and that is shared between all the taps open at the same time. So if the rain head draws a lot of water, the water may come out lukewarm, not hot. Every instant heater also has a minimum pressure and flow before it switches on (as manufacturers such as Etherma explain in their catalogs), so with weak pressure it may cut out and come back on. If you are still choosing a water heater, see our guide: Gas, electric or instant water heater?.

  • ✔ With an instant heater: choose a medium-sized rain head, and compare the "liters per minute" in the shower's catalog with the heater's capacity.
  • ✔ With a storage heater (gas or electric): the tank size matters; a large shower uses up the hot water faster.

Built-in or exposed mixer? And what is a diverter?

A built-in (concealed) mixer has its body installed inside the wall at the rough-in stage, and only the trim plate and lever show. It looks clean and the wall around it is easy to wipe, but the decision must be made before tiling, and any cartridge service needs a plumber who knows the model. An exposed mixer (bath and shower mixer or shower column) is easier to install and replace, which is why it is the best fit for renovations.

A diverter switches the water between two or more outlets: for example, from the rain head to the hand shower or to the bath spout. If you want a rain head and a hand shower together in a concealed system, you must choose a built-in mixer with two outlets and a diverter from the start; a single-outlet mixer will not run both.

  • ✔ Before you buy: count the outlets you want (rain head, hand shower, spout) and choose a mixer with the same number.
  • ✔ Do a pipe pressure test with your plumber before closing the wall and laying the tiles.
  • ⚠ Don't fit a built-in body from one brand with a trim from another; they usually won't fit together.

Tips to stop your shower clogging with limescale and leaking

  • ✔ Choose a head with silicone nozzles: limescale comes off as soon as you rub the nozzles with your finger, as hansgrohe explains for its QuickClean technology.
  • ✔ Every few weeks: soak the shower head or hand shower in white vinegar diluted with water, then rinse it well.
  • ✔ Replace the hand-shower hose as soon as it shows cracks or leaks at the nuts.
  • ✔ Use Teflon tape on the threads when installing, and don't overtighten and crack the thread.
  • ⚠ Don't use steel wool or strong acids such as hydrochloric acid; they damage the finish and the silicone.
  • ⚠ A mixer that drips while closed usually means a cartridge or washer needs replacing, not the whole mixer.

Frequently asked questions

Does a rain shower use more water than a regular one?
Usually yes, especially large heads. Check the "liters per minute" in the catalog; some water-saving models reduce consumption.

Can I install a rain shower if my water pressure is low?
Yes, if you choose a small head or a model designed for low pressure, or install a booster pump. A large head with low pressure will give a weak flow.

Can I install a rain shower without breaking the wall?
Yes, with an exposed shower column that has a rain head and a hand shower and fits onto the existing mixer outlets.

Does an instant water heater work with a rain shower?
It works with a medium-sized head, provided the heater's capacity in liters per minute covers the shower and the pressure is high enough for the heater to switch on.

What is the difference between a one-outlet and a two-outlet built-in mixer?
A single outlet runs only one thing (rain head or hand shower). A two-outlet mixer comes with a diverter that switches between the two.

How do I clean limescale from my shower?
Rub the silicone nozzles, soak the head in diluted vinegar every few weeks, and avoid strong acids and steel wool.
