The answer in two lines

If you want something easy with no wall breaking, a hand sprayer (bidet shower) with a hose and holder on a ½-inch angle valve is the best fit for most bathrooms. If you want hot and cold water in the sprayer, you need a bidet mixer (exposed or concealed) and hot and cold supply lines next to the toilet. The common hose length in manufacturers' kits is 120–125 cm, and close the valve after use so the hose lasts.

"Should I install a hand sprayer or a bidet mixer? Do I need hot water in the sprayer or not? And why does the hose keep bursting?" These questions come up with every bathroom fit-out or renovation, and the answer depends on the plumbing already in the wall. In this guide from Tawredaat (توريدات), an electrical and finishing materials store in Cairo and Giza, we explain the types of bidet sprayers, how they differ in installation, hot water and maintenance, and how to choose the right hose and valve, with numbers from manufacturers' catalogs, named by source.

What are the types of bathroom bidet sprayers?

  • Hand sprayer (Hand sprayer / bidet shower): a sprayer head with a button or trigger, a flexible hose and a wall holder. It is installed on an angle valve next to the toilet, and usually gives cold water only.
  • Complete sprayer kit (Bidet shower kit): the same idea as the hand sprayer, but it comes as one matching kit from the manufacturer: head, hose and holder. For example, the Roca Be Fresh kit includes a head, a 1.2 m metal hose and a wall holder (according to Roca's page on BIMobject).
  • Sprayer with a hot and cold mixer (bidet mixer): a small wall mixer, exposed or concealed, fed with hot and cold water, with the sprayer hose coming out of it. It gives you warm water in winter.
  • Separate bidet: a standalone ceramic piece next to the toilet, with a bidet mixer on it. It needs more space and its own drain.

What does "bidet shower" mean? Many catalogs call the hand sprayer a "Bidet shower", so a bidet shower and a hand sprayer are usually the same thing. A "bidet mixer", on the other hand, is the mixer that blends hot and cold water for the bidet or the sprayer.

Who should choose which?

  • ✔ Hand sprayer: if you are renovating the bathroom without breaking walls, or you want a quick solution that is cheap to maintain.
  • ✔ Bidet mixer: if you want warm water in winter, and you have (or will add) a hot-water line reaching the toilet.
  • ✔ Concealed mixer: if the bathroom is still being finished and the plumber hasn't closed the wall yet.
  • ⚠ A separate bidet needs space next to the toilet and its own drain, so decide on it before the plumbing work, not after.

How do you install a bidet sprayer correctly?

1. A separate angle valve for the sprayer

  • ✔ Give the sprayer its own angle valve instead of taking it from the cistern valve, so if there is a leak you can shut it off without stopping the toilet.
  • ✔ The common size of angle valves in homes is ½ inch, like the Ideal Standard G4308AA and Plaza Lotus valves, and the TOTO sprayer kit, for example, has a ½-inch female thread connection. Make sure the valve thread matches the hose connection before buying.
  • ✔ Use Teflon tape or the rubber washer that comes with the kit depending on the connection type, and don't overtighten to the point of breaking the thread.

2. The right hose length

  • ✔ Most manufacturers' kits come with a 120–125 cm hose: Roca Be Fresh and TOTO with a 1.2 m hose, Grohe Tempesta-F Trigger Spray 30 with a 1250 mm hose, and Ideal Standard G0925AA with a 125 cm hose and a 12 cm head.
  • ✔ This length is enough in most bathrooms if the valve is next to the toilet. If the valve is far away, move it closer instead of buying a long hose that drags on the floor.
  • ✔ If you are only replacing the hose, take the head or the connection size with you, or buy a hose from the same brand.

3. Where to put the holder

  • ✔ Mount the holder next to the toilet, within reach while you are seated, on the same side as the valve so the hose doesn't cross in front of the toilet.
  • ✔ Let the hose hang from the holder to the valve without tension or sharp bends.
  • ⚠ The final installation, especially a concealed mixer or any change to the plumbing, should be done by a skilled plumber or a qualified plumbing technician.

4. Pressure and temperature

  • ✔ Manufacturers set pressure and temperature limits for each kit: for example, the TOTO THX20SEV1CR kit is rated for a pressure of 0.05 to 0.75 MPa (about 0.5–7.5 bar), and the Grohe Tempesta-F hose is designed for up to 5 bar and 70°C.
  • ✔ If your water pressure is high (for example, you have a booster pump), ask the plumber about adjusting the valve or adding a pressure regulator, and don't leave the hose under pressure all the time.

Common mistakes that wear out a bidet sprayer fast

  • ⚠ Leaving the valve open all the time: the hose and head stay under water pressure 24 hours a day. The TOTO kit page clearly says the angle valve should be closed after every use, because the head isn't made to withstand high pressure for long periods.
  • ⚠ A cheap hose with no specifications: it cracks or comes loose from the connection. Choose a hose from a well-known brand with its length and size written on it.
  • ⚠ The holder out of reach: people pull the hose, so it twists and bursts at the connection.
  • ⚠ Sprayer and cistern on one valve: any fault in one stops the other.
  • ⚠ Installing a hot and cold mixer on a cold-only line: you won't get warm water, so make sure there is a hot-water line before you buy a mixer.

Frequently asked questions

Hand sprayer or bidet mixer: which is better?
A hand sprayer is easier and cheaper to install and maintain and needs no wall breaking, but it gives cold water only. A bidet mixer gives you hot and cold water, but needs a hot-water line next to the toilet and more installation work.

What is the right bidet sprayer hose length?
Most manufacturers' kits come with a 120–125 cm hose (Roca and TOTO 1.2 m, Grohe and Ideal Standard 125 cm), which is enough if the valve is next to the toilet.

Do I need a separate valve for the sprayer?
Ideally yes: its own angle valve (usually ½ inch), so you can close it after use, and if there is a leak you don't have to shut off the whole toilet.

Why does the bidet sprayer hose burst so quickly?
Usually because the valve is left open, so the hose is under pressure all the time, or the hose gets pulled and twisted because the holder is too far, or the hose itself is weak. Close the valve after use and mount the holder close by.

Can I install a hot and cold sprayer without breaking the wall?
If there is a hot-water line and an outlet near the toilet, you can install an exposed bidet mixer with a minor modification. If there is no hot-water line, you need a plumber to run a new one.

Are a bidet shower and a hand sprayer the same thing?
Usually yes: catalogs call the hand sprayer a Bidet shower. A bidet mixer, however, is the mixer that blends hot and cold water.
